Fleming Island has a heritage dating back to the 1760s when the area was settled by George Fleming, who was given a land grant by the Spanish Governor of East Florida for his military service. The city gradually developed into what is now a bedroom community towards the late 1990’s and opened its first and only high school in 2003.
