With a rich history of scientific research centers dedicated to studying the behavior of primates and chimpanzees, Lakeside was once home to an abundance of chimpanzees, with the community often dubbed as ‘Monkey Farm’. Today, the area designated to the research centers has been renamed the Yerkes National Primate Research Center to preserve the history and research of local primates. Lakeside extends over a total geographical area of 15.7 square miles, at an elevation of 66 feet.
